Ethiopia: MetEC to Deliver 116 Mobile Toilets to Addis Ababa
Metal and Engineering Corporation (MetEC) is going to deliver 116 three square meter mobile toilets to the Addis Ababa Water and Sewarage Authority (AAWSA). The mobile toilets costed near 100,000 Birr each.
It was in June 2014 MetEC got awarded with the contract and agreed to deliver the toilets in four months time. The toilets will have two rooms, for men and women, each with hand washing facility along with 750 liter water tanker and a septic tank buried underground.
The toilets are built from fiber glass and alunimuim. They are part of the over 1000 toilets of different varieties AAWSA intends to acquire if it finds the means.
According to Solomon Meressa, Public Sanitation Head at the AAWSA, noted Addis Abeba City Land Banking & Transfer Agency has selected 135 plots in eight districts for the installation of the toilets, excluding the Arada and Kirkos districts, both of which are currently under redevelopment.
Form these eight districts Akaki Kality is going to receive the most toilets, 49 mobile toilets, followed by Lideta which will recieve 36. Kolfe Keranio on the other hand, is going to get the least number of mobile toilets, three toilets.
Solomon noted the toilets are going to be installed at public places, such as markets, taxi and bus stations and areas with high pedestrain traffic.
Fikre Tekeste, Sewerage Disposal Services Head at the AAWSA, said the toilets are going to be managed by associations of disadvantaged people, such as the elderly, handicapped, sex workers and people with HIV.
Anyone who wants to use the toilet for peeing purpose will be charged 0.25 Birr while a complete use will cost 0.50 Birr.
The fund for the project, 11 Million Birr, was acquired from the Federal Government and World Bank.
Addis Ababa's city administration allocated 41.5 Million Birr in budget to AAWSA in order to boost the total number of toilets above 1000, which is indicated in the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).
