Uganda’s friendly against Ethiopia today will present Cranes coaching staff a perfect assessment of the side they intend to roll out in the Nations Cup qualifier against Ghana next Saturday.
A superb performance from each member that will be fielded against the Ethiopians will earn each a possibility of being considered for the game against the Black Stars.
It will be interesting to see how defenders Julius Ntambi, Habib Kavuma, Isaac Isinde, midfielders Hassan Wasswa, Mike Sserumaga and striker Robert Ssentongo perform after returning from the wilderness.
There will be more interest in Sserumaga —once a darling for Cranes faithful that appreciated his role behind the lead striker in the team’s set-up in the past.
When fully fi t, Sserumaga is an exceptional talent and has one of the best left foots in the country.
Till now, Cranes are yet to find the ideal number 10 to play behind the lead striker. The closest who came to resolving this conundrum was Martin Mutumba.
However, the Turkey-based midfielder did not get going and has since failed to reclaim a place in the team.
Despite collapsing at the hands of Cranes in recent meetings, Ethiopia has troubled Cranes and will continue to do the same if allowed space to dribble.
Their game is all about possession. The thing that strikes about Ethiopia is that every single player seems comfortable on the ball — including the two centre-backs and the goalkeeper.
The Ethiopians build success on their passing game. Their approach calls on all 10 outfield players to keep the ball moving until spaces appear in the final third to allow the strikers find the goals.
This means Cranes back four will have to play out of their skins to restrict the visitors.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the game that will officially launch “Protect the Goal campaign” geared to combat HIV/ AIDS amongst the youth.
