Addis Ababa,  22 October 2014 (WIC) - Breast Cancer Awareness Day would be observed on Sunday, October 26, 2014 across the country with programs that help increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of the disease.

The programs will be carried out in Oromia, Amhara, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP), and Tigray regional states as well as Addis Ababa, it was indicated.

General Manager of Cancer Care Ethiopia Eshetu Yohannes said in Addis Ababa a walk from the Main Post Office to the National Theater is organized.

At the National Theater educational lecture will be given by a professional and cured women from breast cancer shall share their experiences.

The major aim of the day is to create awareness among the public about breast cancer and create understanding about the alternative medical alternatives, he added.

According to him, out of the 60 percent of the people who die from cancer and contagious diseases annually in the world 80 percent live in developing countries.

The reason for this is the low attention given to the diseases in developing countries, he said.

Ministry of Health has in particlar been working to fight non-contagious diseases which are included in the Growth and Transformation Plan, Eshetu noted.

In line with this, radio therapy equipment would be purchased to give cancer treatment in five major universities in Mekelle, Gondar, Jimma and Hawassa.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and close to half a million women die from breast cancer every year in the world.

Early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured, it was learned. (ENA)
